I drove 360 km on the A6 Autobahn today, and it was madness! Lots of traffic, accidents, trucks, speeds all over the place. It sucked!
I got off the road after a huge portion where traffic was very dense, fired up my GoPro and made this video. I thought I would be able to capture how thick the traffic was, but it had gotten better by the time I got back on the 'Bahn. Unfortunately I ended up getting stuck on a monster traffic jam toward the end of the video and was parked on the highway, which led to me getting !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Anyway, come along on my Peugeot 205 CTI and let's ride on the Autobahn, reaching up to 180 km/h.
Edit: listening to the video now I realize how repetitive I am... I apologize.

Minus the accident, it sounds pretty awesome.

Whee!
I've never been to Europe. I'm surprised at the sheer volume of truck traffic.

It was much much worse 5 minutes before I shot the video. There was a wall of back to back trucks for a few miles. The good thing is that in Germany they are really limited as to where they can pass, and to how fast they can go. I have seen three horrific semi-truck crashes in America where the truck crashed going over 70 mph and killed people. In Germany they are limited to 90 km/h (55 mph) top speed, even when passing.

Not just Germany, throughout the EU. Many operators opt for lower limits (80 or 85) to save fuel.

I figured it might have been an Euro standard but I have little experience driving on European highways outside Germany.

I'm trying to think what U.S. bases are in that area. Six Hummers (two desert colours) @ 14:10.
The traffic doesn't look as bad as some roads you'll see in the U.K.

This was 45 minutes away from Kaiserslautern (Kaiserslautern and Vogelweh Army bases, Ramstein Air Force base), 30 minutes from Heidelberg and Mannheim (US army bases but closing), and 45 minutes from Stuttgart (Panzer barracks). This area of Germany still has its fair share of US Army bases, although their are slowly being closed.
Right before the video the traffic was much worse, in the ten minutes I was on that rest area traffic cleared quite a bit, I could not speed as much as I did right before the video. After I stopped recording I was parked on the Autobahn for almost 20 minutes, and it took me 45 minutes to move 1/4 mile to the nearest exit.

I was in Heidelberg and Mannheim a couple of years ago and didn't notice any bases but wasn't really looking I guess. What did strike me was the large memorial signs on the Autobahn to people who had died on that stretch.
Beautiful places, the lady I was with wasn't bad either (lives in Mannheim).

In a country 80 Million people strong, the size of Montana, on a busy road near several densely populated areas. Pretty sure there's going to be traffic.

Yup, but this day it was more than normal.
